NEW JERSEY ACTION ALERT: Ask Governor Christie To VETO S.2012 and A.3128

USFWS elephant import banAll hunters need to take immediate action to oppose S.2012/A.3128. These bills would cause private property that contains ivory to be confiscated by the New Jersey government. The bills are sitting on Gov. Christie’s desk – so your time to ACT is now. Ask Governor Christie to veto S.2012/A.3128 today by calling 609-292-6000.

If this bill were to become law, all hunter owners of ivory would be irreparably harmed. Many antiques, musical instruments, knives, firearms, and thousands of other items containing ivory legally imported into this country decades ago would have their value stripped. Importing elephant ivory for commercial goods is ALREADY illegal. This bill ignores the huge adverse impact on millions of New Jersey citizens who already own legal ivory without showing how banning legal ivory in New Jersey saves one elephant in Africa.

Governor Chris Christie has yet to sign the bill into law, and as such SCI urges any and all members who reside in or do business in New Jersey to contact the Governor’s office at (609)-292-6000 and ask him to VETO S.2012/A.3128.

Like all conservationists, hunters are appalled by the poaching of African elephants. Unfortunately, instead of going after poachers, smugglers and black-market profiteers of illicit ivory, the New Jersey legislature has decided to attack innocent New Jerseyans by passing an absolute ban on ivory that will not save a single elephant.

Worse, the ban’s poorly crafted “intent” language could allow the authorities the right to seize ivory from individuals who are simply in possession of a family heirloom, not even engaged ivory trade and charge them criminally. You would be guilty until proven innocent.

Governor Chris Christie has yet to sign the bill into law, and as such SCI urges any and all members who reside in or do business in New Jersey to contact the Governor’s office and ask him to VETO S.2012/A.3128.
