SCI Sues Virginia to Overturn Sunday Hunting Ban

On October 23, 2013, SCI filed a lawsuit in Virginia state court challenging Virginia’s ban on hunting on Sunday.  SCI’s lawsuit argues that the ban is unconstitutional under the U.S. Constitution and the Constitution of Virginia, in particular because of Virginia’s constitutional right to hunt.  The defendants in the case are the Commonwealth of Virginia and two Virginia state officials who are responsible for enforcing the Sunday hunting ban.  The lawsuit asserts that Virginia’s purported justification for the ban – to give wildlife a “day of rest” – is not supported by sound scientific or wildlife management principles.  SCI hopes that success in this lawsuit might encourage other states to eliminate statutory bans on hunting on Sundays.  To read a copy of the complaint, click here: Complaint – SCI challenge to Virginia Sunday Hunting Ban – 10 23 13 Final PDF
