Please Encourage Your Senator to VOTE “YES” on SB 288 – Protect Conservation and Protect Hunting!

Urgent action is required by Michigan Safari Club members.  It is imperative we reach out to the Michigan State Senate to voice our strong support for Senate Bill 288 to improve the scientific management of wildlife. Find your Michigan Senator at http://www.senate.michigan.gov/fysenator/fysenator.htm. Make sure they hear from conservationists!

The Michigan Natural Resources Commission is responsible for the regulation of hunting seasons and the establishment of regulations.  The Natural Resources Commission must utilize the best available science for their decisions. SB 228 affirms their authority to use science in the management of Michigan’s wildlife.

SB 288 makes the following improvements that benefit conservation and hunting regulations:

  • Grants the Natural Resources Commission the authority to add species to the game list and establish hunting seasons while retaining the Legislature’s authority to add and remove species from the list.
  • Authorizes the Natural Resources Commission to regulate fishing and the species of fish taken as they regulate the taking of all other game.
  • Expands hunting opportunities for members of the U.S. military.
  • Empowers the Department of Natural Resources to develop programs for the scientific management of fish and game animals such as hunter education, outreach and research related to hunting, fishing, game animals, predators and prey. This would include hunter/angler recruitment and retention and wildlife population surveys.

SCI encourages all members call their Michigan State Senators.  If hunter-conservationists do not voice their support only the opposition can win!
