Attention Florida SCI Members:

Submit your comments in support of Alternative 3 of the draft Hunting Management Plan for Big Cypress National Preserve! The National Park Service (NPS) is accepting comments on the proposed plan until August 24.  You can find more information about the draft plan here.

The Hunting Management Plan will govern 147,000 acres of public land added to the Preserve in 1996 (“Addition Lands”). The Addition Lands cannot be opened to hunting until this management plan is completed.

The proposed Hunting Management Plan offers three alternatives:

  • Alternative 1 (No Action):  Management of hunting would occur throughout the Preserve, including the Addition Lands, in accordance with the NPS/ Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission (“FWC”) Cooperative Partnership Agreement.
  • Alternative 2: Hunting would continue within the original Preserve boundaries but would not be allowed in the Addition Lands.
  • Alternative 3 (Preferred Alternative): This option calls for NPS and FWC, in consultation with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, to apply an adaptive management strategy to managing hunting throughout the Preserve.  It would provide greater flexibility than Alternative 1 in responding to on-the-ground conditions.

What you can do to support Alternative 3:

  • Attend the public meeting on August 9, from 5PM – 7:30PM.
  • Big Cypress Swamp Welcome Center

33000 Tamiami Trail East

Ochopee, Florida 34141

  • The meeting will provide an opportunity for the public to review the draft alternatives, provide comments and suggestions on the Plan, and express support for an alternative.

The deadline for public comment is August 24!  Anti-hunting and eco-fanatics will flood the NPS with comments to keep the Addition Lands closed to hunting. Therefore, it is critical that the NPS receives strong support for Alternative 3 from Florida’s hunting community.
