SCI, SCIF Prepare Objection To USFWS Proposing The Uplisting of Polar Bears To Appendix I Of CITES

SCI’s Litigation Section and SCIF’s Conservation Staff are preparing comments the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service submitting a proposal to move the polar bear from Appendix II to Appendix I of CITES.  The Service has announced that they are considering making such a proposal, but that they have not yet decided whether to do so.  Such an uplisting would severely limit trade of the species and erect further barriers to future importation of polar bears into the United States.  SCI/SCIF’s comments will closely track what SCI/SCIF filed in 2010 about a similar proposal (which was ultimately defeated at the CITES meeting).
